It is essential that the current and future cooling solutions are holistic, and designed for efficient delivery.
We provide technical support for low-carbon cooling solutions, including site- and building-level cooling, district cooling networks and integrated heating and cooling systems. Our services cover feasibility, system design, and optimisation, and consideration of seasonal thermal storage to capture and store “coolth” for later use, producing elegant solutions which balance combined heating and cooling demand efficiently.
Our team also helps clients plan for future cooling strategies, by taking into account projected temperatures and the increasing demand driven by climate change, ensuring networks remain resilient, efficient, and commercially viable over the long term.
District Cooling
Centralised cooling can bring many benefits of efficiency, lifetime emissions and especially when integrated with heat recovery and sector coupling. We provide technical support for district cooling networks, from feasibility studies through detailed design and implementation. Our services include assessing cooling demand, sizing plant and pipework, and integrating systems with existing infrastructure.
We consider opportunities to combine heating and cooling networks and optimise energy flows, including the use of seasonal thermal storage to capture coolth in winter for summer use. We also evaluate low-carbon chilling sources, such as heat pump chillers and other renewable-based cooling technologies, helping clients reduce carbon emissions, improve efficiency, and lower operational costs while ensuring the network meets performance and reliability requirements. We have developed detailed design and implementation for schemes such as Excel cooling network.
Future cooling strategies
Rising temperatures will change the way we live and maintain comfort in our homes and cities.
Assessing the routes to energy transition must consider future climates in the assessment to ensure decisions are robust in different scenarios.
We have developed future heat and cooling demand scenarios and used them to forecast clients planning for long-term cooling needs in a warming climate. Our services include assessing projected demand increases due to rising temperatures, reviewing how different technical solutions can provide best energy solutions for comfort.
We advise on scalable, flexible solutions that can adapt to changing demand, integrate renewable energy sources, and make efficient use of storage or hybrid heating-cooling systems.
This ensures that cooling networks remain reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable as environmental conditions and client requirements evolve.
