We provide technical support throughout all project phases, from initial feasibility and system design, to best practice, acting as Client’s Engineer during installation and handover, and system monitoring and management post-installation
Our biomass project experience includes multi-megawatt power systems, combined heating and cooling projects, large-scale district heating, and small-scale biomass heating
We assist clients in developing strategies for sustainable and local wood fuel procurement, waste resource fuel production and fuel management systems, and have developed Fuel Measurement and Sampling procedures for many schemes. We have experience in all areas of electricity generation via Steam Cycle and Organic Rankine Cycle.
Biomass heat
Fuel resources from local estate forestry management can derive a long term sustainable and economic heat supply to rural estates and businesses whilst proving employment and local investment. We provide independent, impartial technical advice for biomass heating projects throughout all stages of implementation, from feasibility, through design, build and handover, to operation and management. Our services also include assessment of existing biomass plants designed and installed by others, which are not reaching full potential, with specification for remedial works developed where required.
Our services include, delivery strategy for wood chip and pellet ensuring long term fuel supply logistics covering vehicle size, frequency and space required on site. We size biomass boiler and thermal store sizing, develop detailed design and specifications. We provide all Support for contractor tendering, procurement and contract management. Support with fuel procurement contracts for wood chip and wood pellet. Our operations and maintenance service capabilities extend our asset management to biomass boiler remote monitoring and operations.
Biomass CHP
We provide technical support through the development of biomass CHP projects using steam cycle, Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), gasification, and biogas CHP. We provide detailed technical and economic feasibility assessments in order to quantify project costs, develop detailed business cases and advise on whether projects can offer the required return on investment. We have consulted on and developed a number of ORC projects from 65 kWe to 3 MWe and have a wealth of experience in all aspects of design and implementation. This includes projects fuelled by a wide range of biomass feedstocks from virgin forestry and sawmill residues to industrial wood waste and process residues.
We hold significant experience in the assessment and design of advanced thermal conversion technologies such as gasification and pyrolysis. Small-scale biomass technologies utilising advanced thermal conversion processes widens the range of sites where CHP projects could be viable, however, the viability of advanced thermal conversion biomass CHP is dependent on specific technical parameters which can vary considerably across different sites and applications; it is important these are properly considered before investment is made. Existing schemes under CHPQA, FITs, ROCs and RHI are managed for clients and permitting for Planning and Environment Agency. IPPC and Waste Incineration Directive. Our remediation advisory services extend to thermal oil, steam and gasification CHP technologies.
Biogas & Biofuel
We provide technical support for the development of biogas and biofuel CHP projects, covering technologies such as spark-ignition engines, gas engines, turbines, and combined-cycle options. We have experience in projects ranging from small-scale farm digesters or modular biofuel units to larger industrial applications, handling a wide range of feedstocks including food waste, agricultural residues, wastewater sludge, biodiesel, ethanol, and vegetable oils.
Our expertise spans all aspects of design and implementation, including, combustion technology selection, and CHP integration. We manage compliance under CHPQA, FITs, ROCs, and RHI and well as emission control, fuel handling, and regulatory compliance. We use our experience in process engineering and combined heat and power to assess storage and CHP generation from hydrogen, biomethane, and mixed gases.
We have also undertaken detailed assessments of fuel cell technologies for large scale heat and power applications as well as embedded CHP schemes. We have developed knowledge and application in the complex area of gas storage and gas trains for generation systems.
Biochar
We have a proven track record and considerable inhouse technical capability to provide full support for biochar projects, from system design review and technical assessment to due diligence and feasibility studies. Our services include HAZOPs (Hazard & Operability) studies to identify risks and ensure safe, efficient operation, as well as project management, principal designer, and CDM coordinator roles to maintain regulatory compliance.
We have managed the design and delivery of Biochar systems to universities, local authorities and private producers. We also offer construction and commissioning support as a technical adviser, guiding installation, testing, and optimisation. By combining technical expertise with practical oversight, we help clients deliver safe, reliable, and effective biochar systems.
