Energy efficiency & low carbon buildings

We help clients improve energy efficiency and decarbonise their buildings.

Our approach includes undertaking energy surveys and desktop reviews to identify opportunities for reducing consumption and emissions. From single buildings to multi-site or organisation-wide estates, we develop tailored energy and carbon reduction plans, setting out practical, cost-effective measures to improve performance, reduce operational costs, and support long-term sustainability goals.

Energy surveys

We carry out detailed energy surveys to assess the condition, performance, and efficiency of existing building systems. This includes reviewing plant and equipment – its age, condition, controls, and expected remaining life – alongside baselining current energy consumption and associated carbon emissions.

On site, we identify opportunities for replacement, modification, or optimisation, taking into account spatial constraints and practicalities for installation or upgrading. We also consider occupant comfort and service quality, highlighting measures that can improve environmental conditions as well as reduce energy use. The findings from these surveys form the foundation for developing targeted energy and carbon reduction plans.

Reduction plans

We develop tailored energy and carbon reduction plans ranging from single buildings to complex sites, campuses, or organisation-wide estates. Using the insights from our surveys and desktop assessments, we identify practical, cost-effective measures to cut energy consumption and reduce emissions.

Plans can include equipment upgrades, fabric improvements, control strategies, behavioural changes, and integration of low-carbon technologies. We provide clear reporting on costs, savings, payback, and deliverability, giving clients a clear, prioritised roadmap for achieving their energy and carbon goals across any scale of operation.

Building heat decarbonisation

Sustainable Energy assesses a full range of building-level decarbonisation options, from individual heat pumps and electric boilers through to opportunities for connecting to nearby heat networks. Our work involves reviewing existing heating systems to identify necessary upgrades for low-carbon operation and outlining practical, phased transition pathways.

This can include reducing heat demand through fabric improvements (such as cavity wall insulation, roof insulation, and window replacement), improving secondary system controls, installing high-temperature heat pumps as an interim step, and later replacing emitters and pipework to allow low-temperature operation. We develop clear, logically staged investment plans that match technical feasibility with budget cycles, helping clients decarbonise their buildings in a manageable, future-proofed manner.
