We believe every move should take things forward. Sustainable Energy (SEL) is a team of expert consultants, designers, engineers and district energy specialists, passionately working exclusively on low-carbon projects.

For 25 years, we’ve been solving sector problems with creativity. Utilising extensive knowledge to provide impartial advice to help clients develop low-carbon, sustainable energy projects, from the delivery of individual solutions to city-wide heat networks.

We are an employee-owned independent company with an ethical culture with a long-term commitment to our people, projects, customers and society.

We have a diverse range of clients, including local authorities and central government, NHS trusts, universities, social housing providers, housing developers, private energy companies, large international industrial businesses and commercial organisations.

Our History

We deliver impactful projects with our full project cycle advisory service to take projects from initial concept to construction and operation.

1998

Founded by leaders in the field to bring engineering, technical know-how, and commercial expertise to move forward in the transition to sustainable energy.

2000

Led and published the Strategic Study of Renewable Resources in Wales for Welsh Government (formerly the National Assembly for Wales).

2002

Led technical, economic, planning and funding advisory roles for the first sustainable wood fuel electricity power scheme in Wales.

2004

Technical and commercial advisory for first commercial renewable fuelled transport fleet in UK.

2006

Advised on implementation of 100% renewable energy holiday business with district heat and solar PV.

2008

Technical advisor for the largest single onsite private wire 2.3MW wind turbine in UK.

2010

Designed, developed and delivered several rural biomass and district heat projects under the Forestry Commission's Wood Energy Business Scheme.

2011

Lead technical advisor for the delivery of the flagship biomass heat network for the National Botanical Garden of Wales.

2012

Led the technical and delivery advisory of several heat decarbonisation projects for the National Trust, in their move away from fossil fuels.

2013

Lead advisor for UK's largest biomass heating plant comes on line for BSW Timber Europe's largest timber manufacturer.

2014

Began the decarbonisation journey of the Duffryn Heat Network with Tai Hedyn (formerly Newport City Homes).

2015

Led technical delivery team for the West Dean village heat network that sources fuel from its own sustainable forestry.

2016

Delivered project development role of one of Heat Network Delivery Unit's early heat network projects in Bradford

2017

Technical and delivery advisor for the district heat network that supplies all the buildings across the iconic Portmeirion Village.

2018

Unveiled the concept designs and strategy for a Bristol City wide heat network, going on to design and support the installation of energy centres, network and building connections across the city centre.

2019

Lead technical advisor for novel 20MW biomass heat and electricity CHP plant at large food manufacturing group.

2020

Led delivery of multiple phases of development of the campus wide heat network for University West England.

2021

Led technical delivery of aquifer source heat pump network for social housing scheme for royal Borough Greenwich.

2022

As lead technical oversaw delivery of England’s largest harbour water source heat pump for Bristol Heat Network.

2022

Delivered technical advisor role for commercialisation of the Seaham Garden Village mine water heat network scheme to supply new housing developments.

2023

Project development and technical services to initiate UK's largest ambient water source residential heat network in Welborne.

2024

Led technical and commercial advisory to develop and break ground for the Solihull Town Centre heat network.

2024

Provided all stages of advisory and delivery for the low carbon ground source seasonal heating and cooling system for Caerphilly Council HQ.

2025

As lead technical advisor oversaw the delivery of the first phase of Cardiff Heat Network into operation.
