Asset appraisal & due diligence

We have provided discreet specialist technical due diligence services and asset appraisals for a range of high-profile clients. This has included both technical and economic appraisal of renewable energy systems, energy networks and assets.

Our due diligence experience includes technical review for heat network acquisition, performance review and life expectancy analysis of a large renewable power plant, technology reviews for a leading UK energy company, and heat network business plan reviews for a number of investment funds.

Our services are confidential, clearly defined and based on the wealth of experience of our senior consultant team.

Sustainable Energy provides analysis of technical and financial merits of developments, reviews of Project developer and overall viability of projects.

Our team review current and required licenses and permits, in tandem with risk analysis, identifying capital cost inflation risks, permitting concerns, construction and contract risks, and advising risk mitigation strategies. This is in addition to technical reviews of plant engineering and design relative to latest industry standards.

Technical due diligence

Investment decisions require technical expertise with a practical, experience-led perspective to provide the key technical inputs in to commercial and financial evaluations.

Drawing on decades of experience in designing, advising on, and commissioning heat networks, we assess every aspect of a proposed development to identify risks, opportunities, and practical solutions. We provide due diligence services to support clients, agents, sellers and buyers to gain a comprehensive view of the techical viability of their project.

We evaluate the project developer and overall project viability, examining the proposed technology, plant design, and engineering approach to ensure the team and resources are sufficient to deliver the project. We review capital cost estimates, major equipment contracts, and interconnection arrangements, alongside licenses and permits required for completion and operation.

Our assessments include a detailed risk analysis, highlighting potential challenges such as cost inflation, permitting delays, construction issues, and contractual risks, while identifying strategies to mitigate them. We also carry out a technical review of the plant design against the latest industry standards, ensuring the network is efficient, reliable, and future-ready.

Technical risk review

Our technical risk reviews give clients a clear understanding of the operational, financial, and performance risks associated with their energy plant and infrastructure.

We assess reliability, plant performance, and potential points of failure, reviewing both design and historical operation to highlight vulnerabilities.

Using data analysis and practical insight, we identify inefficiencies, underperformance, or compliance gaps, and recommend remediation, upgrades, or maintenance strategies to reduce exposure. With decades of experience advising on and commissioning low carbon plant and heat networks, we don’t just flag risks—we put them into context and provide actionable solutions so decisions can be made with confidence.

Heat network and asset appraisal

We can provide a clear, complete picture of your heat network’s performance, condition, and potential—helping buyers, sellers, and investors make informed decisions.

Drawing on over 25 years of experience designing and advising on heat networks, we bring hands-on expertise to every evaluation.

Our approach looks at the full network, from plant and pipework to substations and control systems, assessing condition, capacity, and operational efficiency. We review network design and operations, analyse historical and real-time performance data, and highlight areas for optimisation.

Where upgrades or expansion are planned, we provide technical guidance during installation and commissioning, ensuring improvements are effective and future-ready. By combining technical due diligence with real-world experience, we deliver practical, actionable insights that help clients reduce risk, optimise performance, and unlock the full potential of their networks.

Decarbonising academic excellence

Frenchay Campus is a large, mixed-use residential and academic campus in Bristol, comprising academic buildings, offices, a sports centre, residential blocks, greenhouses, and a data centre. We have worked with UWE since 2017 across three distinct phases of heat network decarbonisation, with a combined contract value of £357k, supporting their goal to fully decarbonise their heat supply by 2030. The network has grown from a gas boiler energy centre to a campus-wide system planned for transition to a 3.2 MW ground source heat pump by 2028.
