Bradford’s city centre heat network

Bradford City Centre
Bradford’s city centre heat network
Client Bradford Metropolitan District Council
Location Bradford

Bradford MDC engaged us deliver a detailed feasibility study design for a city centre district energy network. The project was part-funded through HNDU and supported a successful first-round ESIF funding bid.

Following the feasibility, we were subsequently contracted by the council to develop the project. The project involved stakeholder engagement and working with other council departments to gain buy-in to the project and take the scheme forward. The scheme is now being taken forward by Bradford Energy Limited, a private sector venture with 1 Energy, who is now delivering the network under a privately financed delivery model. The scheme is in construction with anchor customers including the University of Bradford, Bradford College, and Bradford Courts signed onto long-term heat supply agreements.

Scope

01

We were first appointed by Bradford MDC to take forward the city heat network opportunity funded as one of the first Heat Network Delivery Unit (HNDU) funded feasibility studies. This included stakeholder engagement, energy demand modelling, network route assessment and proving, and development of a dynamic techno-economic model. Following the successful feasibility stage, we were awarded a subsequent contract to develop the project for an initial phase of 10 key buildings. Throughout both stages we maintained close stakeholder engagement with public and private sector heat customers to ensure accuracy of demand data and reduce project risk.

Techno-economic feasibility, heat network concept design and Stakeholder Engagement

Solution

03

We developed a phased heat network concept that removed gas boiler emissions from the city centre, provided a route to decarbonisation, gained Council support and de-risked the scheme ahead of market engagement and delivery. The project is now in delivery with 1 Energy.
